Body

Setting Up Faculty and Staff’s PC to be able to Remote Desktop to:

  1. Reserve an IP for the remote machine in DHCP.
  2. Open an Admin Elevated command prompt terminal
    1. Add the user to the Remote Desktop Users group on the host, that you want them to be able to remote to, by running the following command:
    2. net localgroup "remote desktop users" azuread\username@skagit.edu /add
    3. Confirm that the user has been added by running: net localgroup "remote desktop users"
      1. Note the double quotes in those commands, as single quotes do not work in command prompt for net commands.
    4. Close command prompt
  3. Open the Remote Desktop Connection app on the client terminal machine that you want the user to remote from.
    1. Click the Show Options button
    2. Enter the IP addressed reserved in step 1 above under the computer filed
    3. Enter the user name; mv\username has worked, though email should work as well.
    4. Click the Save Save as button and save the .rdp file on the client's desktop using a name that references the remote computer.
    5. Close the Remote Desktop Connection
  4. If the client terminal machine is a Windows MV domain computer and the remote computer is an Entra computer, continue at step 5; otherwise, skip step 5 and continue at step 6.
  5. Edit the .rdp file:
    1. Right click the file you saved in step 3.4
    2. Select Open With > Choose another app from the right click context menu
    3. Select Notepad from the Select an App popup menu
    4. In Notepad, add lines for or edit the following lines to reflect:
      1. enablecredsspsupport:i:0
      2. authentication level:i:2
    5. In notepad, click File > Save and then close the edited .rdp file
  6. Set windows power options on the remote machine to never sleep and never hibernate so that the machine will be on when the client attempts to remote to it.
  7. If the client terminal machine is off campus and the remote machine is on campus:
    1. Entra remote machine: Use any connect VPN as RDGateway is not configured with Entra integration.
    2. MV Domain remote machine: Prefer RDGateway configuration.
  8. Test the remote desktop file on the users desktop to confirm they are able to remote.
