The problem: Cannot connect to DIRmgmt Remote Desktop services

You are following the procedures at Account Activation Guide – JC Grantee Data Collection Tool (jcgrants.com) but are unable to log into the remote desktop session due to a connection issue.

Use these procedures to configure a computer to connect to the DIRmgmt remote desktop using Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Microsoft Store. 

 

Note: Login (Username and Password) problems are out of the scope of this article:

Please read the error message carefully to ensure you are dealing with a connection issue. Username and Password issues will typically show an error indicating that the username or password is incorrect, or that the login is incorrect. If this is the case, please contact DIRmgmt tech support, as SVC IT does not manage these systems and we cannot change your password. 

If you think you are dealing with a VPN password issue, you can try logging into Self-Service Console - Home (datapipe.com) to test your password. (While this link worked in the past, SVC IT cannot guarantee that it will continue to work.)

Install Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Microsoft Store

  1. Open the Microsoft Store from the Start menu.

Search for store in the start menu and open the Microsoft store

 

  1. Search for Remote Desktop in the store, select the app, and press the Get button.
    1. Depending on your version of Windows:
    2. You may be asked to sign in to the Microsoft store. You do not need to, and there should be a button to cancel sign in and continue downloading Remote Desktop.
    3. You may have to click the Get button twice. Or, the button may turn into an Install button that you also have to click. 

 

  1. After it is installed, the "Get" button will change to an "Open" button.
  2. At this point you can close the Microsoft Store and continue the procedure, as we do not need to open Remote Desktop.
  3. Continue below to download a DIRmgmt RDP file.

Download and open a DIRmgmt RDP with Microsoft Remote Desktop

  1. Follow the procedures at Account Activation Guide – JC Grantee Data Collection Tool (jcgrants.com) to connect to DIRmgmt up to step 6.1 on page 25.
    1. In case the procedure has changed, there is also a copy attached to this KB article. It can be accessed on the right side of your screen under attachments. 
  2. When completing step 6.2 on page 26, you will see one of two dialog boxes (Please read before continuing)
    1. Option 1: A dialog box asking to open or save an RDP file.
      1. Save the file to your desktop and continue below at step 3
    2. Option 2: A dialog box asking to connect a remote desktop session.
      1. Click the connect button. 
      2. The connection will fail; close the connection.
      3. Copy and paste %Temp%\Low into your start menu and press enter to open a file explorer window at your temporary files.
      4. In the Low temporary folder, copy the TSPORTAL#nnn remote desktop link to your desktop. If there is more than one, copy the newest file to your desktop.
        1. Right-click and select Copy from the right-click menu.
        2. Right-click your desktop and select Paste from the right-click menu.
      5. Continue below at step 3

 

  1. Right-click the .rdp file you previously copied to your desktop, and select Open With > Choose Another App from the right-click menu.

 

  1. On the How do you want to open this file? dialog box:
    1. Check the Always use this app to open .rdp files. check box.
    2. Select Remote Desktop from the list.
    3. Click the OK button to open the file. 

 

  1. Click Continue on the dialog asking you to trust the remote computer. 

 

  1. Gateway Log in dialog: Enter your DIRmgmt username and password. 
    1. Username should be prefixed with dirmgmt\  like
      1. dirmgmt\Stephanie.Mock
    2. Click the connect button.

 

  1. Workspace Log in Dialog: Enter your DIRmgmt username and password. 
    1. Username should be prefixed with dirmgmt\  like
      1. dirmgmt\Stephanie.Mock
    2. Click the connect button.

 

  1. Accept certificate and connect? dialog: 
    1. Click the check box to not ask again.
    2. Click the connect anyway button. 

 

  1. You should now be connected to the remote desktop session and may need to follow additional steps in the connection walkthrough at Account Activation Guide – JC Grantee Data Collection Tool (jcgrants.com) (also attached to this KB article)
  2. For future connections:
    1. Follow the steps at Account Activation Guide – JC Grantee Data Collection Tool (jcgrants.com) (also attached to this KB article) to connect to the VPN.
    2. Follow steps 5 through 7 above to log into the remote desktop connection.
    3. Note: Occasionally the .rdp file becomes stale, and needs to be downloaded again. Simply follow the steps outlined above again to download a new .rdp file.
