The Issue

Microsoft recently became aware of a major security vulnerability in Windows printing. To combat the vulnerability, dubbed "Print Nightmare", Microsoft has been implementing several changes to Windows Printing. These changes have disrupted printing at SVC, and IT has been working to restore printing stability.

Check if Your Machine Requires Update KB5005565

  1. Left-click the Start Button (typically in the bottom left hand of your screen.)
  2. Type on your keyboard to search for View Update History.
  3. Left Click the View your Update History option in the Start Menu search.

 

  1. Review your installed updates for update KB5005565.

 

  1. If it is installed, continue below at The Fix: Updating and Reconnecting to the Printer Step 2
  2. If it is Not installed, continue below at The Fix: Updating and Reconnecting to the Printer Step 1.

The Fix: Updating and Reconnecting to the Printer

  1. Follow the procedure in this KB article to run Windows Updates to download update KB5005565.
    1. TDX Article Name: Updating Windows
    2. Also linked to this article in the Related Articles section (typically found to the right or below the article body.)
    3. Update KB5005565 should now show in the Update History (See above procedure, Check if Your Machine Requires Update KB5005565.)
  2. Left-click the Start Button (typically in the bottom left hand of your screen.)
  3. Type on your keyboard to search for Printers
  4. Left-Click the Printers & Scanners option in the Start Menu search. 

 

  1. Find and Left-Click the broken printer in the list. 
    1. Record its name and print server for later.
    2. IE, Name = F207-P-47, Print Server = mvprint5.mv.skagit.edu.
  2. Click the Remove device button.

 

  1. Close or Minimize the Settings window.
  2. Follow the procedure in this KB article to reconnect the printer you recorded in step 5.1.
