Zoom Assistance

Zoom is an easy to use tool for live video and audio conferencing, messaging and screen sharing across desktops, mobile devices and conference room systems. Any person (student, faculty and staff) can create and use a free account.

Two types of Zoom accounts available to SVC instructors, staff and students.

  • A free basic user account is an account without a paid license. With this account, the meetings will time out after 40 minutes. But, you can reconnect as many times as you need. Please go to the Zoom website (https://zoom.us/) and create your new account. Make sure to use your SVC email. 

  • A pro account is a paid licensed account. With this account, you have unlimited time usage.

Zoom Content Retention

If you record a Zoom meeting, it will remain available in the Zoom cloud for four months, after which point, it cannot be accessed or recovered. If you plan to continue accessing a recording from Zoom, move it to Panopto where it will remain available forever.

Zoom AI Companion

Zoom has recently made available an AI Companion tool for anyone with a Zoom pro account and it has been enabled for SVC. This tool can be used in Zoom meetings, chats, whiteboards, and more. Some of the features that may be of interest include providing meeting summaries, letting attendees ask the tool to catch them up on the meeting if they missed a portion or ask questions in a different language help generate ideas on Whiteboards, and more sophisticated meeting recording processing. Aspects such as the meeting summary or ability for attendees to ask the tool to catch them on what has been discussed can be particularly helpful for instructors.

How to turn on Zoom AI Companion

If you want the AI companion available for use in your meetings by you and/or your students, follow these steps:

  • Sign in to the Zoom web portal.
  • Click Settings.
  • Click the AI Companion tab.
  • Toggle desired settings

You can learn more about the settings for each feature on their respective guide for enabling the features. Please keep in mind that SVC does not use the Zoom email client, and as such, those features will not be available for you.

Notes

  • eLearning will help instructors to upgrade from Basic to Pro accounts as needed.
  • Non-instructor employees will request a Pro Zoom account from IT HelpDesk.
  • Students can use a free basic account; SVC doesn't provide students with Pro Zoom accounts.
