How a LockDown Browser works:

Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) is a customized browser that increases the security of online testing in Canvas. It is available for both Windows and Mac operating systems, Chromebooks and iPads. Tests designed to be taken in LockDown Browser cannot be accessed through a standard web browser.

  • A LockDown Browser functions much like a standard browser, but some options have been removed or work differently to offer a robust and secure online testing. When students use a LockDown Browser to take a Canvas test, they are unable to print, copy, go to another website or access other applications, or close a test until it is submitted for grading.

Using a LockDown Browser with a webcam:

  • An exam that is LockDown Browser enable can optionally require the use a webcam as an extra security feature.
  • If your exam requires the use of a webcam (sometimes referred to as Respondus Monitor), you’ll be guided through a brief set of screens prior to the start of the exam.
  • Using a LockDown Browser with a webcam: The student experience.

Getting Started:

  • Check ahead with your instructor if the test requires a LockDown Browser.
  • Tests designed to be taken in Respondus LDB cannot be accessed through a standard web browser such as Google Chrome, Safari and Mozilla.
  • LockDown Browser is already installed on most computer labs on campus.
  • Download and install Respondus LockDown Browser on your personal computer. If it is already installed on your computer, you don't need to download it again. Otherwise, click download and follow on the screen instructions to install it.

Taking the Test:

  • Close all programs (you will not have access to other programs while taking the test).
  • Locate the LockDown Browser shortcut on the desktop and double click it (for Macintosh users, launch LockDown Browser from the application folder).
  • If you are prompted to close blocked programs, choose "yes."
  • Log in to your Canvas course.
  • Navigate to the test or quiz you want to take.
  • For Chromebook users:
    • Go to your Canvas course and locate the quiz or exam you need to take.
    • Click "Take the Quiz;" the quiz will automatically start within Respondus LDB.
    • If you are prompted to downloald the LockDown Browser, follow on the screen instructions to install it on your Chromebook.
    • Note: Respondus LockDown Browser will only work with quizzes an instructor has enabled for use with LockDown Browser for Chromebook. Contact your instructor to enable it.
