New Quizzes Features

On 12/02/2022, we launched the New Quizzes feature in Canvas, but we anticipate that the Classic Quizzes will continue to be available indefinitely. The New Quizzes option provides many updates that will be useful for faculty and your students. Overall introduction to New Quizzes (4.5min video). Examples of popular features:

  • Apply accommodations such as extra time or attempts for all quizzes a student takes in your course.
  • Attach outcomes to individual quiz questions.
  • New question types including categorization, ordering, hot spots, and stimulus.

Be assured that during the transition period (from 12/02/2022 and beyond), eLearning will host several workshops about New Quizzes. During the transition, faculty will have a choice to use the New or Classic Quizzes as they wish.

FAQs

  • How do I activate New Quizzes?
New Quizzes are currently activated on a course level.  Go to the course you would like to use New Quizzes in. Select course "Settings" and choose "Feature Options." Then, enable the New Quizzes feature. Watch this 1 min video on how to activate New Quizzes in your course.

  • Can I migrate my Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes? Yes.
You can migrate a Classic Quiz into a New Quiz. At this time, quizzes must be migrated one at a time; you can not migrate multiple quizzes at once.
New Quizzes does not have the option for surveys, so if you migrate a survey, it will be turned into a quiz.

  • Can I migrate my New Quiz to a Classic Quiz? No.
New Quizzes cannot be changed to be a Classic Quiz.

  • Can I turn New Quizzes off in my course and still have my quizzes work? Yes.
If you decide to turn off New Quizzes, your existing New Quizzes will continue to work. However, they will remain New Quizzes and will not convert into Classic Quizzes, so if you want the quiz to be in the Classic Quiz format, you will need to create a new quiz.

  • Can I use both New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes in the same course? Yes.
Yes, you can have a mixture of New and Classic quizzes in your course. Please keep in mind though that New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes have a different appearance for students, so there is potential for confusion.

  • Can I use Question Banks for New Quizzes? No.
Question Banks have been redone as Item Banks for New Quizzes. At this time, there is not a way to migrate Question Banks into Item Banks. However, there is a work-around so you do not have to recreate all of your Question Banks. You can watch our 6 min video on converting Question Banks into Item Banks to learn how.
