General Issues

Some general troubleshooting tips you can try when you run into problems are:

Unable to log into Canvas

Students

New to Skagit Valley College? Make sure you activate your MySVC account and use your MySVC information to log in.

  • If you have tried logging in five times, your account lock for 30 minutes and you will be unable to log in
  • Use the password reset tool to change your password
    • Using this tool will change your password for Canvas and your MySVC student email
  • If you are not taking classes this quarter, you will be unable to access Canvas
  • If you are enrolled in a future quarter, you will gain access to Canvas at least one week prior to the start of that quarter.
  • Be sure that you are using your MySVC student email address ending in @mysvc.skagit.edu

Employees

  • Try resetting your password in Okta
    • Doing this process will change your password for Canvas and your Skagit email
  • Canvas accounts are automatically created for instructors. If you are not able to log in, contact eLearning
  • If you are an employee who is not an instructor and you are not able to log in, contact eLearning

Unable to reply to Canvas notifications through Microsoft Outlook

  • Canvas is aware of the issue, but they are not currently seeing this being caused by Canvas. They believe it is an issue with Microsoft Outlook.

  • The work-around is to log in Canvas and reply to your students through Canvas Inbox. The other option you may try is to utilize the Outlook desktop client app instead of the web client (office 365).

Recommended computer requirements:

Mobile app:

  • Most of the content can be read on your mobile device (there is a Canvas app for mobile devices), but DO NOT use smartphones to submit assignments, quizzes, and discussions as there have been major issues for students trying to do so. The Canvas App for your phone is convenient to check grades or read a discussion post; please know that it is not as robust as the full desktop/laptop version.

Browsers:

  • There are several reasons you may be experiencing difficulty, however, the most common issue is an outdated internet browser. View Canvas supported internet browsers and download or reinstall current versions.
  • Note that Internet Explorer is one of the unsupported browsers.
  • Some supported browsers may still produce a banner stating, "Your browser does not meet the minimum requirements for Canvas." If you have upgraded your browser and you are still seeing the warning banner, try logging out of Canvas and deleting your browser cookies. Learn how to clear your cache on a Mac or a PC
