What Is Panopto and Why to Use It

How to Access and Use Panopto

  • You can access Panopto through Canvas
    • Go to one of your Canvas courses and select the Panopto Recordings option in the left navigation pane.
    • If the Panopto Recordings link is not visible you will need to manage your course navigation list to make it visible.
  • From there, you can launch the recorder app to start creating a new video, or organize your videos into your course folders.
    • You can download the Panopto app on SVC devices through IT’s Software Center
    • If the app prompts you to log in, on the sign-in page, use the drop-down menu and select the SVC Official Canvas option to be logged in through your Canvas account.
  • After you record your video, you can edit it through the Panopto video editor to do things like trim the video, add captions, and more.

How to Let Students See Panopto Videos

Allow Students to Download Panopto Videos 

Sometimes students need to download your class Panopto recordings, so they can listen or watch them offline. Before students can download those recordings, the instructor has to change the settings of the recording to allow them to download it. 

Step by step instructions to change the recording settings​

Upload a Zoom Recording to Panopto

  1. Sign into the Zoom website using your Skagit employee email address and Zoom password
  2. Navigate to your Recordings
  3. Locate the recording that you wish you download the video for and click on its title
  4. Identify which file you want to download and select the download icon
    1. Generally, you will want to download the largest file
    2. You can download all the different files associated with your video by selecting the Download option above the list of individual files
  5. Sign into Panopto by logging into Canvas, navigate to a course, and select Panopto Recordings in the course navigation
  6. Navigate to the Panopto folder you want to upload the file to
  7. Click on the Create button and select Upload media
  8. Locate the Zoom file you want to upload to Panopto and select Open
  9. It may take several minutes for the video to process in Panopto

What to do if your recording is "offline"

  • Access any class in Canvas
  • Click on Panopto Recordings in the left navigation 
  • Click the create button
  • Click Record new session
  • Do not open Panopto; instead close the pop-up 
    • Click download-This will update Panopto.
    • Follow on the screen instructions to complete Panopto installation.
