Canvas-Zoom-Panopto Integration

As of July 27, 2020, Zoom is integrated with Canvas and Panopto. That is, you can create, manage, and start class Zoom meetings within your Canvas course. Cloud recordings for meetings you created through Canvas/Zoom integration will automatically be imported in your Panopto course folder. By default, each Canvas course has a Panopto folder, which only you and students in that course have access. Canvas-Zoom-Panopto integration requires 3 steps to make it work for you.

Step 1: Add Zoom to your course navigation.

  • Go to your Canvas course and click “Settings.”
  • Click “Navigation”
  • Locate “Zoom” link and drag and drop it to the list of visible links and save.
  • Resource: step-by step instructions on how to manage course navigation links.

Step 2: Schedule a new meeting for your course.

  • Go to your Canvas course and click “Zoom” link located on the left navigation. If Zoom link is not listed on the course navigation, you need to complete instructions in Step 1.
  • Click “Schedule a New Meeting” and follow the on-screen instructions. Optional, but recommended option is to set your meeting to “Recurring meeting” to be used at any time.
  • Do not select the option to use your personal meeting ID for the meeting; if this is done for multiple classes/quarters, Panopto will not know which course is the correct Canvas course to send the video to.

Step 3: Start Zoom meeting in Canvas & recording.

  • Go to your Canvas course and click “Zoom” link.
  • Locate a meeting you want and click “Start” which will automatically start Zoom application.
  • While your Zoom meeting has started, you can choose to “Record.” Make sure to choose “Cloud Recording.” After ending your meeting, the recording will be imported in your Panopto course folder.
  • You will receive an email notification of when your video has completed processing.
  • By default, recordings in Panopto are visible to students enrolled in that class.

How students join a Zoom meeting through Canvas.

  • Students will go to Canvas course and click “Zoom” link on the course left navigation
  • Students will see a list of  meetings for that course and will click “Join” button for the meeting they want to join.
  • You are welcome to continue to share your Zoom links with students the same way you have done it in the past. For example, you may want to add a Zoom meeting link to a module.

How students access recordings in Panopto

  • Make sure that "Panoptp Recordings" link on the left navigation of the course is visible to students.
  • Resource: step-by step instructions on how to manage course navigation links.
  • Students click "Panopto Recordings" link to view a list of course recordings available to them.

Note:

  1. If a Zoom meeting was created through a Canvas course, its recording will be automatically imported in a corresponding Panopto course folder.
  2. Zoom will automatically move cloud recordings to the trash after they have been successfully imported into Panopto. Recordings in Zoom trash bin will be permanently deleted after 30 days. We have a very limited Zoom storage quota.
  3. Recordings in Panopto will not be deleted because we have unlimited storage.
  4. If a Zoom meeting was not created though Canvas, its cloud recording will be saved in Zoom, but will not be imported in Panopto.
  5. If needed, consider downloading your Zoom recordings and upload them to Panopto as a long-term archive option.
