Installing Software Via the Software Center

Installing Software on your Windows Computer is as easy as opening the software center, finding an application, and clicking the install button!

  1. Click the Windows Start Button in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen.
  2. Type "Software Center" on your keyboard to search for the Software Center in the Start Menu.
  3. Open the Software Center from the Start menu Search.

  1. Find a software by Browsing all, filtering, and or searching.
  2. Click the software you wish to install to open it.

  1. Click the Install button.
    1. You may also see:
      1. Log Off: The software can only be installed when the user is at the log-on screen. Close applications, click the Log Off button and wait an appropriate amount of time for the software to install (5 to 10 minutes for most small programs like Chrome and Zoom).
      2. Repair: The software is already installed on your computer, or you have an older version of the software and the Software Center has not been synchronized to download the newest version of the software (See below steps to check this). 
  2. Software installation is automated. The status will change to Installed when the installation is finished.

Synchronizing the Software Center

  • You may want to synchronize the software center in the following instances:
    • The software center is missing an application that should be available to the machine or your user account.
    • The software center is displaying an older version of an application that was recently updated, and you want to install the latest version. 

 

  1. Click the Options tab in the Software Center left-hand window pane.
  2. Click the Computer maintenance header to expand its settings.
  3. Click the Sync Policy button.
  4. Wait for the syncing policy indicator to finish. 
  5. Click the Applications tab in the Software Center left-hand window pane.
  6. Attempt to install the software again following the steps above at Installing Software Via the Software Center step 4.

Using the Software Center While Off-Campus

Software that is required for all computers to function while working from home, such as Zoom, is available for install while off-campus. These software can be installed like normal using the procedure above.

You have a few options for software that is Not available while off-campus:

College Employee Options:

  1. Connect to the College VPN.
    1. Contact the I.T. Help Desk if you need access.
    2. Use this procedure to connect if you already have access.
    3. Once connected to the VPN, use the above procedure to install the software. The software may take longer to install depending on the speed of your home Internet connection.
  2. Use Remote Desktop to connect to your office machine on campus.
    1. Contact the I.T. Help Desk if you need access.
    2. Use this procedure to connect if you already have access.
    3. Follow the above procedure to install the software on your office computer.
  3. Return to campus with your laptop.
    1. Once connected to campus WIFI, you will be able to follow the above procedure to install software on your laptop.

Software Center Notifications

The Software Center will present dialog boxes for required software and Windows Updates. The dialogs are safe to interact with. Please take the opportunity to schedule updates at a time that will not interfere with your work.

Make a Software Request

College employees may make a request for software to be made available in the Software Center.
The software must meet certain criteria to be listed, including having valid licensing and ability for automated installation; Please consult with the Information Technology department via the form below Before purchasing software.
